12-17-09 Music and Memory

We've experienced it before, when things are set to music, we tend to remember them. The ABCs, Nursery Rhymes, and nearly everything we heard on Schoolhouse Rock! Business has used this to great affect too! We can recite phone numbers, slogans, and detailed product information, thanks to a catchy jingle!

But the affect of music can be powerful even as it's subtle. A song can often send us back in time, rekindling old memories and thoughts not experienced since the time we heard it last. Powerful stuff. Of course, we've long been subject to music in grocery stores and restaurants designed to turn us into shopping and eating machines! But I digress . . .

The fact is, Music creates a mood and an environment. Used effectively for your business, it will help communicate your message and help your audience remember it. - Mike Pascarella

12-17-09 Moving Pictures and Competition

Busy webpages are "in," right? Well, not exactly. A common mistake many web designers make is to over-use animation and movement on a page. Good user-interface (UI) design directs the eye and helps the user navigate and eventually supports a call-to-action. When animation (or even video) is indiscriminately placed on a page in an "anywhere it will fit" approach, you lose control of the UI. Worse yet, the different areas of movement competes with each other, either confusing or overwhelming the eye. This creates a subtle "fatigue" that either makes the user less responsive, or simply makes them leave the site.

I always get curious looks when the 'media guy" suggests a "less-is-more" approach.Yes, although I love rich media (and might have a greater tolerance for it than most), I also understand that in most cases, it is a means to an end. Rich media a great tool that can be very effective, but only if used with care. A great video that detracts from the goals and purpose of a website isn't REALLY a great video, is it? Maybe not in that particular application.

Like gunpowder and flame, it takes experience and an integrated plan to effectively use video, audio, and animation together. - Mike Pascarella
